Private Prescriptions

As a private healthcare provider, Summerfield Healthcare can offer you private prescriptions services at all of our clinics. Our registered GPs can diagnose new conditions and prescribe the necessary medication, or make arrangements for repeat prescriptions.

A private prescription is medication prescribed through a private practice or doctor. It is not an NHS prescription and is not covered by the NHS in any way. There are several reasons you may prefer to get private prescriptions instead of going through the NHS:

  • Get prescriptions for medications not covered by the NHS
  • Get prescriptions quickly without waiting for appointments with NHS specialists
  • Organise travel medication quickly and easily
  • Confidentiality – you do not always have to share with your NHS GP if you have a private prescription made out
  • Quickly access emergency medication, including emergency contraception

All of our doctors are registered with the GMC (General Medical Council) and are qualified to diagnose and write out private prescriptions.

FAQs

What are private prescriptions?

A private prescription is the same as any other prescription – a qualified medical professional prescribes the appropriate medication for your condition. The most significant difference is that private prescriptions are not paid for by the NHS, so you will need to pay the full medication cost and sometimes a pharmacy fee.

How much does they cost?

Although we are a private healthcare provider, our priority is you and your health. That’s why we are committed to giving you excellent healthcare at affordable prices.

Initial consultation fees for private prescriptions are £69 for a 15-minute appointment. If you feel you need a longer appointment or would benefit from more time for a diagnosis, extended 30-minute consultations are available at £89.

Initial prescriptions are included in your consultation fee and given there and then, and repeats are £45 and can be posted to you, subject to your clinician agreeing to the repeat prescription.

There is no additional fee that we charge for your prescription but depending where you fill the prescription there may be further fees. Most pharmacies have a minimum fee, so even if your medication is £4, they might charge £5 if that is their minimum. This would still be cheaper than the NHS prescription fee of £9. Keep in mind; however, that medication could also be more expensive, so you could pay in excess of £20 for your prescription, depending on what it is and where you are filling the prescription.

If you want to, you can call up pharmacies before ordering your prescription to get an estimate of how much it will cost.

You should also be aware that normal NHS exemptions do not apply to private prescriptions. This means that if you are under 18, over 60, pregnant, or otherwise usually exempt from paying for prescriptions you will still need to pay for private prescriptions.

How do I get a private prescription?

Our clinics are open for private prescriptions across multiple locations. Private prescriptions can be created at the discretion of our GPs and they will always need to conduct a GP consultation initially.
