Dermatology and Skin Care Services

Dermatology is the study of the skin. Hair and nails also make up this branch of medicine which has a spectrum of mole removal to facial reconstruction. The skin is the largest external organ of the body, as well as being the largest organ in general.

Accounting for in the region of 15% of all GP consultations skin diseases are very common. For example consultations regarding moles are often seen in GP surgeries. This is understandable however as the average person with white skin has at least 30 moles on their body, indicating how much of a priority in medicine dermatology is. Some of the most well known skin conditions are:

  • Acne
  • Dermatitis
  • Eczema
  • Psoriasis
  • Skin cancer

Dermatologists are responsible for the prevention and treatment of the above and other diseases associated with skin, hair and nails.

Cosmetic dermatology is rarely covered under the NHS and waiting times are usually long which is why so many people choose to have private treatment.
