Dry January – a timely reminder for a health check!

It’s that time of year! The excesses of Christmas and New Year are taking their toll with alcohol consumption top of the list – that is why Dry January is so important.

Too much alcohol can have a detrimental effect on health and wellbeing and even result in serious problems with addiction – something which can go unrecognised until it’s too late. Dry January provides the opportunity to give alcohol a miss for one month and acts as a reminder to book that all-important health check.

Many people have a health check with us in January, including blood tests to assess liver function, and then have another done towards the end of the year to see how a change of lifestyle has impacted their general health.

Booze-free challenge

Dry January acts as a reminder. It allows you to take stock of drinking habits, go alcohol-free for a month and take steps to cut back if necessary. It is run by the charity Alcohol Change UK and takes the form of a month-long booze-free challenge helping millions of people reset the relationship they have with alcohol. Of those who sign up:

It can be difficult coming to terms with, or even recognising, a drinking problem and it’s a sad fact that someone dies every hour as a result of alcohol, but it only takes three weeks to break a habit which is why Dry January is helping to raise awareness of the dangers and supporting people to make life-changing decisions.

Important support

It’s also true that those who sign up to Dry January are twice as likely to make it through to the end of the month alcohol-free. Whether it’s drinking too much, too often or just taking a break, Alcohol Change UK is helping to reduce the harm drinking can do through treatments, checking drinking patterns and providing tips on cutting back your intake.

One of the successful ways Alcohol Change UK is helping is Try Dry, a free to download app. It supports people through Dry January, helps to cut down long-term drinking and guides those wanting to go alcohol-free.

Changing lifestyles

Summerfield Healthcare fully supports the goals of Dry January and Alcohol Change UK and we offer advanced and premium health checks, as well as gold and platinum well man/woman medicals, providing patients with a personalised health plan for a longer and healthier life.

We are committed to changing lifestyles for better health and wellbeing and the health checks offered give our clients access to accredited testing laboratories and unrivalled bespoke reporting software.

An initial 30-minute appointment allows our team to put together a detailed history and take blood and urine samples which helps us assess kidney and liver function and calculate the risk of heart disease and diabetes.

This means we are able to keep you up-to-date on how alcohol may be affecting you and what steps you can take to ensure you stay healthy.

Our health checks and well man/woman services will resume once lockdown restrictions are eased.
