When to get STI tests

There are a few reasons you might want to get private STI testing done. These could include if you:

  • have had unprotected sex
  • are with a new partner and would like peace of mind about your sexual health
  • are concerned by symptoms that you can see or feel
  • are pregnant and would like to screen for STIs privately
  • would like to know your sexual health status for your own peace of mind

If you have had unprotected sex or think you are at risk of having an STI, you should book a test as many STIs do not show symptoms immediately. The sooner you are tested, the sooner any STIs can be detected and treatment can be started.

If left untreated, STIs can affect your general health.

If you notice any symptoms of STIs, you should speak to your care provider as soon as possible about making an appointment for STI testing. Some of the most important symptoms to be aware of and get tested for immediately are:

  • Pain when you urinate
  • Itching, burning, or tingling sensation around the genitals
  • Blisters, sores, spots, or lumps around the genitals or anus
  • Powder or dots in your underwear which could be eggs from pubic lice
  • Unusual discharge (including vaginal and penile)

What can be tested?

We offer individual tests or can do multiple STI tests or a full STI screen. Some of the more commonly requested tests are for:

  • HIV
  • Chlamydia
  • Gonorrhoea
  • Syphilis
  • Hepatitis B
  • Herpes

You can book your preferred STI tests with our booking team. Then during your appointment, your clinician can advise on any additional tests they recommend. This could be a single test or a selection of them to cover a wider range of possible STIs. We also offer a bespoke package testing for the 20 most common STIs at a cost of £282 if you would prefer the peace of mind of testing for all common STIs.

We also offer an ‘Early Detection Sexual Health Screen’ for £177.00 which tests for the most common STIs (Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea, HIV, Hepatitis B and C, and Syphilis).

What does an STI test include?

Before your test, our professional and discreet staff will speak to you about which tests you feel are appropriate. You will need to answer a few questions about your medical and sexual health history to help us give you the best medical service. These questions will include:

  • When you last had sex
  • When you last had unprotected sex
  • If you have any symptoms, and if so, what they are

You should try to answer these questions as honestly as possible so we can give you the best advice and care.

If you would prefer not to discuss any details with us, we can also arrange for you to have a full screen for all STIs.

Depending on the test or tests that you need, we might need:

  • A urine sample
  • A blood sample
  • A urethral swab (a swab from where you urinate)
  • A vaginal swab
  • A physical examination of your genitals

Our highly qualified staff will do everything they can to make you feel comfortable and safe throughout the process.

Getting results

Some tests that don’t require samples being sent to the lab will give you results immediately.

Other tests require analysis at the laboratory and results are often back with you within 48 hours of receipt at the lab, but our team can advise you specifically for the test(s) you require.

If you receive a negative result that means your tests were clear and you do not have the STI we were testing for. You do not need to do any follow up after a negative result unless there are still active symptoms that you are concerned about.

Should you receive a positive result it means you have the STI that was being tested for. For many of our patients they are satisfied with their result and don’t require anything further. However for a lot of people, finding out you have an STI can be difficult to process.

If you would like an explanation on your results, or help with your diagnosis we can provide a follow up GP consultation, as well as provide the necessary medication and advise you on a treatment plan.

Your results are private and confidential. Your privacy is important to us and we make sure we work with the highest level of professionalism. We can share your results with your NHS GP at your request.

Please note a follow up GP consultation must be booked if you wish to discuss your results with one of our healthcare professionals.

Do I need a referral?

No, Summerfield Healthcare is a private healthcare service so we do not require any referral or previous medical observation. You can self-refer whenever you choose to.

What if I am nervous about getting the tests?

It is common for people to be sensitive about sexual health. Our staff will do everything they can to put your mind at ease before, during, and after your tests. Some things to remember that might help you to stay calm and fight nerves are:

  • Your results are completely confidential, and no one needs to know about your tests beyond you and your clinician.
