ZPP Lead Profile Blood Test | Available in Birmingham, Cardiff, Wolverhampton & Shrewsbury

A Zinc Protoporphyrin blood test, or ZPP, is used to screen for exposure to lead and lead poisoning.

People who work in a lot of industrial jobs will be exposed to lead and organic lead compounds. These can be found in paints, plastic, bearings, insecticides, and even ceramics. Exposure to too much lead can inhibit the production of healthy blood cells and lead to anaemia, weakness, and organ damage. If lead exposure is not addressed, lead poisoning can be fatal.

Pregnant women can also pass on lead poisoning to the foetus through the placental barrier. This can be incredibly dangerous for the baby and can stop the development of the baby’s nervous system.

If you work in an industry that may have led to lead exposure, or if you think you might have lead poisoning, then a ZPP lead profile blood test can help you towards a diagnosis and treatment.

Summerfield Healthcare offers a variety of blood test services in Wolverhampton and Shrewsbury, including ZPP lead profile blood tests. All of our tests are competitively and accessibly priced and can be booked to suit your schedule. No referral is needed to book a blood test with us.

Who should get a ZPP Lead Profile Blood Test?

Because lead levels can be elevated without clear symptoms, if you are exposed to lead regularly then you should consider getting a test. Lead poisoning can sometimes be misdiagnosed or go undiagnosed until it has done irreversible damage, so it is always better to get tested if in doubt.

Certain people are more likely to have been exposed, including:

  • Those working in professions with known exposure to lead, including:
    • Autorepair
    • Mining
    • Pipe fitting
    • Battery manufacturing
    • Construction
    • Recycling
  • People who have lived abroad in developing countries where there are less strict rules on lead exposure and use in manufacturing
  • People living in homes built before 1970 where there may be lead paint or lead pipes
  • Hobbyists who work with lead solder, usually in stained glass or jewellery making.

How does the test work?

When you arrive for your ZPP lead profile blood test one of our medical staff will meet you and ask you a few questions before taking a sample of blood. A thin needle is used to take the sample from a vein on the inside of your arm.

This sample is sent to the laboratory to measure the level of iron in your blood.

We know that waiting for test results can be a stressful time, so we aim to have your results with you as soon as possible. As soon as they are ready, we will send them electronically as a secure PDF. Alternatively, you can request that they be sent first class through Royal Mail.
