Thyroid Profile Blood Test Wolverhampton & Shrewsbury

The thyroid is a small gland found on the lower part of your neck. It plays an important part in helping to regulate a lot of your body’s processes, including your metabolism, energy generation, and mood. It does this by releasing hormones, but sometimes it releases too many hormones, called hyperthyroidism, or too few hormones, called hypothyroidism. When it is working well, your energy levels, moods, and metabolism all work relatively steadily, but when there are problems with your thyroid, you may start to notice symptoms including:

  • Weight gain
  • Lack of energy
  • Depression
  • Weight loss
  • Anxiety
  • Tremors
  • Psychosis
  • Fatigue
  • Dry skin and hair
  • Muscle cramps, aches, and pains

An estimated 1 in 20 adults will experience a thyroid disorder in their lives. If you are concerned that your thyroid may not be working properly, then you may need to have a blood test for thyroid profile.

How does it work?

The thyroid profile blood test works the same way as any routine blood test. A small amount of blood is drawn from your arm, usually the inside of your elbow, using a small needle and vial. The test is quick, and there is only mild discomfort and a slight scratch when the needle is inserted. Our professional and experienced clinicians will be on hand to make sure you feel comfortable and calm before, during, and after the test.

Your blood is then sent to the laboratory for analysis and you will be able to return to normal activities immediately. We will contact you as soon as results are available.

Understanding your results

Unlike a lot of other blood tests, thyroid test results are considered in comparison to one another. Because the TSH works to regulate FT3 and FT4, these levels are all looked at together to see how they compare and if any of them are irregular both alone and when looked at in contrast.

If your TSH level is high and your FT4 level is low, this is often an indicator of hypothyroidism.

If your TSH level is low and your FT4 level is high, this is often an indicator of hyperthyroidism.

Your FT3 levels will show if there is hyperthyroidism and how severe it is. FT3 is useful in conjunction with FT4 and TSH as low level of TSH with a high level of FT4 may still be acceptable if your FT3 level is normal.

The remaining tests help to indicate other disorders, such as autoimmune thyroid diseases.

Diagnosis and treatment for thyroid disorders

Thyroid disorders can be complex and because we want to ensure the highest level of care when your results are ready, our clinicians will speak to you about the next step. If your levels are normal, you may want to ask about other tests to find out why you are still not feeling well. If your results show any abnormalities, then your clinician may want to refer you for further scans.

After abnormalities on thyroid blood tests, you may be referred for an ultrasound scan. An ultrasound will show any structural problems or tumours and will indicate to your clinicians if you need a tissue sample taking for further testing.

If the ultrasound scan shows no abnormalities, then your clinician may prescribe medication to help your body regulate its thyroid activity. This medication will depend on your condition and its severity and you may need to come in for additional tests to follow up and check that the medication is working.
