What are Blood Group Tests?

There are over 30 ways that blood is categorised, but the most important and widely used tests analyse your blood based on the ABO blood group system and the Rhesus factor. All blood types are A, B, or O and the rhesus factor classes your blood as either positive or negative. This means you will fall into one of eight categories, with some blood types being much rarer than others:

  • O- or O+
  • A- or A+
  • B- or B+
  • AB- or AB+

Knowing your blood type is especially important if you need a blood transfusion as the body will reject blood that doesn’t match its own.

Blood group tests are also used regularly for:

  • Major surgery
  • Blood donation
  • Biometric data, including passports
  • Travel documents
  • Maternal compatibility (rhesus-factor)

Knowing your blood type can make handling emergencies and accidents a lot easier and transfusions can be set up a lot faster if you have the information already.

What happens during a blood group test?

During your consultation, we will take a brief medical history as well as give you an opportunity to raise any concerns or ask any questions you might have about the test. If your medical history warrants it, we might also recommend other tests or screens for your health, but there is no obligation for you to undergo any further testing.

If you are happy to proceed with your test, one of our clinicians will take a small sample of blood from the vein in your arm. In rare cases we might need to draw blood from another area such as your hand. A thin needle is used to take the sample and a cotton swab is then pressed against the needle site to prevent bleeding and minimise bruising. A plaster will be put over the site and you will be able to leave our clinic immediately after.

Your sample will be sent to the laboratory for testing and your results will be available shortly.

If you have a fear of needles or blood, please let our clinicians know so that they can help to put you at ease and make you feel comfortable. It is not unusual to feel faint while blood is being taken or immediately afterwards, so please let our staff know if you need to lie down.

Following your test you may have slight bruising or swelling around the needle site, but any pain or discomfort will go away within a few days. There should be no other side effects.

When will my results be available?

Results are usually available the following working day, but please be patient your sample will need time to reach the laboratory and be properly analysed.

Results are sent electronically as an easy to read PDF. This format is secure and easily accessible on most devices. If you would prefer to receive physical results, we can post them to you with Royal Mail’s first class so that you will have them with you as soon as possible. Please let our staff know your preference when you make the booking.
